How to Play Daff

with Nasheeds

This book is one of the first in the English language to explore the subject of the daff, or frame drum, used by Muslims around the world to accompany nasheed and qasida singers. After exploring the background and history of the daff, Abdurrahman Smith uses pictures and tables to explain the main holding positions, strokes and rhythms used by daff players, helping readers to learn the daff on their own. A collection of online videos demonstrating how to play ten different daff rhythms is also available to readers.

Abdurrahman Smith

Daff Teacher and Author

Having studied music in his youth and after accepting Islam in his teens, Abdurrahman Smith taught himself how to play the daff and was able to understand the theory behind its use in Islamic settings. He now has a popular YouTube channel on which he demonstrates how to play the daff and the various rhythms that can be used to accompany some of the world's most famous nasheeds.
